Description

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Sandpile Groups" workshop from November 15th to November 20th, 2015.

In recent years, the sandpile group of a graph has been an object of study in
several distinct mathematics communities, including those of algebraic and
tropical geometry, combinatorics, the theory of computation, and the study of
pattern formation. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a range of
senior experts and junior researchers to foster communication and to establish
new links and joint projects.

The topics of the workshop will include the graph-theoretic Riemann-Roch theorem
of Baker and Norine and generalizations, the study of critical configurations as
matroid invariants, the abelian networks of Dhar and generalizations, and the
pattern formation of sandpile aggregations.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry.

The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT.
