The BIRS workshop brought together experts on statistical methods, machine learning, high-performance computing and particle physics from across the globe. We had a very productive week of in-depth discussions and hands-on work, which laid the groundwork for a number of new, collaborative projects we will work on in the coming years. These are all projects aimed at pushing forward the methodology of large-scale inference studies in particle physics. Such methodological advances will be crucial to enable the research community to fully exploit the rich and complex data sets of the large, publicly funded experiments in particle and astroparticle physics.
The workshop I attended was excellent, and the structure was really geared towards working together, discussing ideas and approaches, rather than just listening to a stream of talks by the participants.
