Schedule for: 20w2237 - Creating Authentic Experiences in Mathematics Courses (Postponed) (Cancelled)

There are no formal talks scheduled for today. If you arrive early, go for a walk, enjoy. After dinner we meet in the 2nd floor lounge in Corbet Hall. We will introduce ourselves, socialize, and give space to some participants to say more (more about this later). TBA: dinner options.

Presenters will take about 5 minutes to demonstrate a particular resource or activity that they have developed and used. These examples of bringing authentic content into our classrooms will be helpful for participants later in the workshop when they start developing their own materials.

The participants will be pre-split into 4 focused working groups. The groups will be formed before the workshop and participants will be expected to come in having familiarized themselves with some existing resources; examples of such resources include Nord and Nord (1998), Hanson and de Vries (2007) and Jupyter notebooks developed at McMaster. The working groups will then concentrate on creating ready-to-use materials, consisting of a combination of lesson plans, classroom activities, homework assignments and computational explorations.

Lessons learned and challenges - where do we go from here? How do we ensure a continuous support to the instructors who wish to include authentic applications into their courses? After the workshop, all working group documents and presentation materials will be made available for participants and the general public through the existing Repository page (https://firstyearmath.ca/).
