Description
The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Higgs Bundles and Harmonic Maps of Riemann Surfaces" workshop from July 1st to July 6th, 2018.
Higgs bundles and harmonic maps are two-dimensional analogues of four-dimensional gauge field equations which describe substantial portions of modern physics. Their study, in addition to providing a strong link between mathematics and theoretical physics, has revealed deep connections among important areas of mathematics, such as algebraic and differential geometry, representation theory, integrable systems, dynamics and partial differential equations. The workshop brings together researchers working on the different strands of this theory to learn about their respective ideas, results, methods, important open problems, and to foster long-term collaboration.
The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT.
