Description
The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Recent Advances in Actuarial Mathematics" workshop from October 25th to October 30th, 2015.
Everyday we face all kinds of risks, and actuarial science is a discipline mainly concerned with the measurement of risks and uncertainties, and reducing their financial consequences. Everybody is impacted, either knowingly or unknowingly, by actuarial science. To demonstrate, we make sure that we have enough financial protection when faced with risk and uncertainty, and insurance is just one of the many ways we can mitigate many of these risks. We make sure we are covered when we get in an accident, when our property has been damaged by fire or hurricane, when we get ill, or when we live a longer retirement period. Actuaries are considered experts in insurance and financial risk measurement and management, but the environment and market is making a change in the landscape forcing actuaries to expand the scope of their work. Thus, it is no surprise to see that research in the discipline continues to blossom; it is the ripe moment to bring together renowned scholars in the discipline to exchange and share ideas to enhance the future direction of actuarial research. The workshop aims to provide this venue. At the same time, it provides for the opportunity among these scholars to establish potential collaborations in the future that will even further exhilarate research activities and improve the quality of research in actuarial mathematics.
In the last two decades alone, there has been a rapid growth in the actuarial profession that is contributing to the rapid increase in the number of actuarial researchers worldwide. This workshop will provide the unique opportunity to bring together researchers in this discipline in the most possible diverse sense: well experienced, young and fresh graduates, and practitioners interested in our research output.
The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry.
The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT.
