Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Algebraic K-Theory and Equivariant Homotopy Theory" workshop from February 12th to February 17th, 2012.

Although algebraic $K$-theory was defined more than 30 years ago, progress has been quite slow. Even for very simple input data, the $K$-groups are completely unknown except in several foundational examples. From a practical stand-point, this is frustrating since these groups are closely connected to many other branches of modern mathematics. This proposal hopes to connect people from the various approaches to computing these groups to build better connections and hopefully, a better understanding of this important mathematical object.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
