The Banff International Research Station will host the "Cohomological methods in geometric group theory" workshop from November 25th to November 30th, 2012.

One of the simplest and yet most important equations in mathematics is the law $d^2=0$. This deceptively simple equation arises naturally in geometry, physics and algebra, and in the 21st century it is playing a key role in the development of our understanding of high dimensional spaces. With the need to model ever more complex systems the importance of this cannot be overstated. This workshop brings together leaders from around the world with a variety of mathematical expertise to exchange their knowledge and to encourage collaboration in this cutting edge area.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
