2007 Summer IMO Training Camp (07ss005)

Arriving in Banff, Alberta Tuesday, July 10 and departing Sunday July 22, 2007

Organizers

Bill Sands (University of Calgary)

Description

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a mathematics contest for high school students, is held each year somewhere in the world, and Canada enters a team of six students each year, organized and sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). This year the IMO will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam on July 19-31. A Training Camp for the Canadian Team is taking place at BIRS from July 10-21. Here the students will receive lectures, and problem sets to work on, plus several "Mock Olympiads", practice contests to prepare them for the IMO ahead. The students will also be given ample time off for excursions and other opportunities to enjoy the many facilities of BIRS and the wonders of the Banff area. Similar Training Camps were held at BIRS just before the 2003 and 2005 IMOs.

This year for the first time, the Mexican IMO Team will also be training at BIRS with the Canadian Team, from July 13 to 19. This development is part of the growing partnership between the Canadian and Mexican mathematical communities which has been spearheaded by BIRS and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences in conjunction with the Canadian Mathematical Society.

The media are invited to a Media Event at the University of Calgary at noon on Tuesday, July 10, in the Learning Commons, 5th floor of the Biological Sciences Building, where the Canadian IMO Team will be introduced. This event is the conclusion to the initial stage July 6-10 of the Training Camp, which takes place at the University of Calgary and also includes a few outstanding "local" students training with the IMO Team. The IMO Team travels to Banff later in the afternoon of July 10.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines within the industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologa (CONACYT).
