Prior to Your 5-day Workshop


Approximately one year prior to your workshop at BIRS you, the organizer, should be receiving a letter of detailed information for planning your workshop. You will also receive a letter requesting a list of participants.

Invitations to BIRS events are made by BIRS. Thus we will handle the actual emailing of the invitations, as well as accumulating the responses and providing you with online access to the status of your participants.

Participant List Submission/Status

Electronic Mail List

BIRS provides a standard GNU Mailman electronic mailing list for BIRS workshops. A mail list, in this context, is a system whereby one sends an email message to an e-mail address, and that message is redistributed to a list of e-mail addresses. This facilitates group discussions, and is often used to send announcements pertaining to the workshop.

Your workshop mail list will be automatically populated with those of people who confirm their attendance in your workshop, and also those who request to be added to the workshop's mail list (not necessarily workshop participants, or requests could come from alternate email accounts of your workshop participants). As the workshop organizer, you will be responsible for managing the workshop's mail list, including accepting or denying requests from people who wish to be added to the mail list.

To create a mail list for your workshop, login to the Organizer Interface. The first time that you login, you will be asked if you wish to create a mail list for your workshop. You can select either "Yes" or "No" to create a mail list, or not. Further instructions on how to manage the mail list will be e-mailed to you upon creation of the mail list.

Travel Grants for Participants

Notice of change under PIMS Travel Support to BIRS

In the past five years, PIMS had committed substantial financial resources to offset the cost of travel to the Banff International Research Station, and help facilitate the participation of young Canadian mathematicians in the BIRS scientific program.

This is to inform the Canadian scientific community that in view of the success of BIRS in recent years, and the need to redirect funds to other under-funded initiatives, PIMS will no longer be able to offer travel support to BIRS conferences. This change took effect April 1, 2008.
