Press Release:

New perspectives on State Space Models

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "New perspectives on State Space Models" workshop from August 27th to September 1st, 2017.

In ecology and fisheries science, the need to understand animal behaviour and predict species survival implies fitting the best scientific models with the flexibility to include un-modelled complex influences on the observed behaviour. State Space Models combine expert knowledge into a mechanistic model with the flexibility to incorporate unforeseen environmental and climactic influences, as well as challenging unexpected events. These models are then tuned with noisy observations so that resource managers and ecologists can make predictions about the ecosystems at the next time point in the future. This workshop brings together international researchers from government and academia to discuss recent advances in State Space Models and provoke new research directions by fostering interactions between researchers from diverse fields with high collaborative potential.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT.
